The Lifestyle Journey Program
There is a crisis in the health and well-being
of our young people.
Why?
|
Many factors have contributed to this
trend including:
|
- The vast array of fast and processed
foods available
- Two-income working parents with little
spare time to plan meals, eat healthily
or be active themselves or as a family
- The influence of fashion and popular
culture on body image
- The lack of regular physical activity
due to:
- The availability of sedentary
activities such as the internet,
video games,
and
television
- The de-emphasis on physical
education and extracurricular
active pastimes
taking
place in many schools
|
- The mass of nutrition information and
"mis"-information available,
much of which is disjointed and confusing
|
What are the Symptoms?
|
Unhealthy eating habits and inadequate
physical activity contribute to a wide
variety of problems for young people,
including:
- Increased rates of obesity
- Increased risk of Type II diabetes
- Increased risk of heart disease and
poor cardiovascular health
- Increased risk of some types of cancer
- Increased risk of bone and joint problems
such as osteoporosis
- Emotional and psychological stress and
strain in struggling to conform to unrealistic
body images
- Dieting and dysfunctional eating behaviours
and in some cases, eating disorders
- Poor physical fitness and poor posture
|
What Can Be Done?
|
We need to address this problem - in
schools, in our homes, at the community
level and as a society in general.
We also need to help our young people
make healthier choices and help themselves.
|
The time has come for change.
The Lifestyle Journey Program from Ideas
For People is designed to empower young people
to make their own healthy choices. This program
provides young people with "back-to-basics"
information concerning nutrition and physical
activity so that they can make informed healthy
choices. However, besides providing information,
the program also provides young people with
hands-on tools they can use to foster long-term
behaviour change and create healthier habits.
The books and tools are written in a non-preaching,
non-judgmental manner, at a level that young
people will find easy to relate to and understand.
The Lifestyle Journey Program emphasizes
increasing a young person's knowledge level
about nutrition and physical activity, as well
as offering tools and strategies for actually
applying their knowledge and fostering lasting
changes and healthier habits.
